Nursing with Compassion

In 1986, a small group of volunteer Registered Nurses (RN) came together because the poor and homeless communities of south-east downtown Toronto were not receiving adequate health care. Their fierce commitment to providing client-centred health services to this vulnerable population continues today.

Clinics

Nursing blood pressureClients are seen in eight different weekly clinics that are run in community drop-in centres, at the Street Health offices and on the streets . Our services are offered in locations where the homeless population gather to rest, eat and socialize. Individuals come to these clinics in order to be assessed and treated holistically, by an RN or NP, for any health concerns they may have. They are also referred to other specialized services in the community to ensure that they are receiving the full range of services they require.

In response to a needs-assessment finding that homeless and marginally housed people don’t receive adequate foot care, Street Health RNs and NP were trained in advanced foot care, and now provide foot-care services as part of their holistic client care. The RNs and NP also provide health promotion: health teaching; advocacy; mentoring; research; collaboration with other organizations to provide education sessions based on the needs of the population.
